Medical Career Pathway & Future Physician Leaders 

Founded in 2009 by Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz, The Medical Career Pathways and Future Physician Leaders Programs are long-term mentorship initiatives for students who are interested in fulfilling a mission of service to the community. Programs are in person and based out of the Temecula Valley Entrepreneur's Exchange. Physician shadowing rotations are offered to Future Physician Leaders (college students and graduates only) in partnership with Southwest Healthcare's Temecula Valley Hospital.


The 2023 programs will be six weeks during the summer.

Medical Career Pathway Program (For High School Students)

Date: Mondays and Wednesdays, June 24, 2024 – July 31, 2024

Time: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Medical Career Future Physician Leaders Program (For College & Grad Students)

Date: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, June 25, 2024 - July 31, 2024

Time: 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Location: Temecula Valley Entrepreneur's Exchange, 43200 Business Park Drive, Temecula, CA 92590


Students in the program participate in 3 different components:

  • Didactic - Lectures, workshops, and group discussions held primarily in the summer along with networking events with physicians and healthcare leaders throughout the rest of the year.
  • Community Service and Leadership - Allows students the kinesthetic learning experience of community health and gives them the opportunity to improve healthcare access to their community. Participants will complete a community health project and present their findings on their topic at the end of the program. 
  • Physician Shadowing - (Only for College & Grad Students in the Future Physician Leaders Program) Students will participate in physician shadowing rotations at Southwest Healthcare's Temecula Valley Hospital pending a background check and a completed health screening checklist.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • This program is intended for students in the Inland Southern California region enrolled in local high schools, colleges and universities, and medical schools.
  • Students must be at least 18 years of age to participate in shadowing rotations.
  • Provide a resume.
  • Provide a cover letter.
  • Letter of recommendation (optional).
  • Pass a background check (College & Grad Students in Future Physician Leaders Program).
  • Complete a health screening checklist (College & Grad Students in Future Physician Leaders Program).
  • Students should be committed to the program.
